Vardianoi Vardianoi beach view

The Vardiani island, south of Paliki, have a history associated with Venetian domination. It is the place where later, during the British domination, a large lighthouse was built, which was leveled against Italian bombardments in 1942. Today on the largest island - the small is essentially a rock - there is a modern lighthouse and the ruins of two temples. In the narrowest part of the Vardiani Island, what looks towards the opening of the Gulf of Livadi, the Englishman Charles Napier made an imposing lighthouse. The lighthouse was designed by the engineer Napier Kennedy in 1829, which was destroyed by Italian occupation troops in 1942. It was a 34 meter tall cylindrical structure with a focal height of 28 meters and showed the sailors the four-kilometer entrance of the Livadi Bay. There is another much smaller lighthouse to serve the ships. For many, the Lighthouse was built in 1824.
